all-inclusive, executive class ice fishing for trophy lake trout

Kenora, Ontario, CANADA, located on the north shore of famous Lake of the Woods is one of North America’s finest fisheries. So are many other lakes hidden in the area, particularly when fishing in the spring sun for trophy lake trout. Situated just 3 hours north of International Falls Minnesota and only 2 hours east of Winnipeg Manitoba, Kenora’s thick boreal forest conceals some of the finest trout waters found anywhere in Ontario.

A well disciplined angler may have the opportunity to land a spectacular lake trout weighing in excess of 15 lbs. while most average anglers should hook a fine fighting trout weighing between 4 and 10 lbs. All of our trout fishing excursions take place during the warmth of spring break up, which generally occurs between mid March and the end of April.

As the cold Canadian winter releases her grip on the frozen lakes and landscape of Northwestern Ontario, the extended warm days of spring launch a feeding frenzy within the lake trout lurking in the depths of the cold, clear trout waters. Our trout lakes, with depths in excess of 200 feet, are the last to freeze in the fall and the last to thaw in the spring. Other more shallower lakes such as Lake of the Woods and the surrounding walleye lakes are hazardous for ice travel at this time of year because of their lack of depth. The ice of the deep, cold trout lakes maintain their integrity well into April when new vegetation begins to bloom along the shoreline.

Kenora weather conditions directly affect the speed of the receding ice. We keep a careful eye on both the weather and ice conditions and take no chances with our guests.

As spring progresses, the warm spring sun causes the ice to break free of the shoreline and the ice sheet then lifts and begins to float ontop of the lake. When this occurs, surface water on top of the sheet begins to run off at the shoreline and through cracks and air holes.

This is the time when trout fishing is at its best! With the surface of the ice high and dry, its thickness is usually about 24 inches. Provided no heavy rain deteriorates the surface of the sheet, the ice will remain solid blue as its thickness slowly receeds under the warm spring sun.

The water is so clear that you can actually see the silver flash of the trout below the surface as you reel one in.

The weather at this time of year can also be quite mild, though the odd snow squall does periodically pass through the area. Most ice fishing can be done wearing only a few layers and a warm sweater. Both sun screen and sun glasses are a must as the ice sheet intensifies the sunshine and can burn you in minutes.
